How to spot a real vs fake Tom Ford sunglasses

How can you tell if the pair of  Tom Ford Sunglasses  that you are about to buy online are genuine? Follow these simple steps to verify the authenticity of your purchase.

1: Tom Ford Etching
Authentic Tom Ford sunglasses should have a ‘Tom Ford’ etched on the top left side of the lens. When you do actually see this, go ahead and carefully compare the size and font with that used in the official font logo. The etching should be very neat and of high quality in appearance but definitely not painted. If you do find a painted Tom Ford “etching” then you’re very likely purchasing a fake”. You can actually feel the etching when you run your finger across the lens.

2: The Retail Box

Authentic Tom Ford sunglasses come in a neatly packaged Tom Ford branded retail box. Inspect the logo and font and ensure it matches one used officially by Tom Ford. Sometimes the prints on the fakes are made with very low quality dyes that they might seem to give out a little bit of a gasoline odour with you smell them and they rub off easily. The real ones look sturdy. Some of the older models may vary in colour and style. Be aware that genuine packaging can accompany counterfeit sunglasses.

  1. Awesome write-up. I’m a normal visitor of your site and appreciate you taking the time to maintain the excellent site. I will be a frequent visitor for a really long time.

  2. Hello.
I had recently purchased a pair of Tom Ford sunglasses off of Stephanistyle. Everything seems to match.. except my info booklet is white, not brown. I was wondering if this just has to do with older models. They come along with a white booklet instead. Feedback on this??
It’s a gift and I need to know whether to return it or not.

  3. Thanks for the write-up! I bought a new pair of Tom Ford spectacles from ebay. The box and case seems genuine even though there was no bar code on the box. The words Tom Ford also weren’t etched onto the inside of the lens, there was also no serial number on the left side. The warranty card also seems different because there are Chinese and Korean words. The words Tom Ford also weren’t centralized in the middle of the envelope and there was no information booklet. I guess it’s 100% fake and I should quickly return it right?

  4. Hi there, thank you for this article. I purchased Tom Ford sunglasses online and they came from Hong Kong. I have checked the above and have noticed the following differences: the info booklet is white paper printed in black (looks well printed) but not on brown paper like your’s in the picture. The authenticity cards logo is printed in gold on the envelope, but the logo is brown on the card. The wording is also different, mine says: Thank you for purchasing an authentic TOM FORD EYEWEAR product. The brown suede sunglasses case has the logo inside and out, but on the outside the suede is a bit worn and the inside logo has a rectangular imprint shape around it. The glasses have TOMFORD on both temple tips. And finally the “arms” are squeaky and tight when I open and close them. Not sure if I am being pedantic but thought I would check! Thank you. I also had prescription lenses fitted which are great and the original lenses were included and have the etched logo on the one side.

  5. Hello community,

I have a good one for you. My TF glasses seems authentic and everything checks out EXCEPT for the fact that I do not see inside of the left frame, “the model number and frame sizing details beginning with the letters “TF…” Everything else checks out fine. What should I conclude. This is the ONLY potential “red flag” out of the entire group that you listed.

  6. Hi there .. First of all, thanks so much for all this info you have provided .. Makes it so easy to authenticate a purchase. Appreciate your effort and help.
I just bought a pair of Tom Ford Sunglasses (style, ‘Alicia’) from Amazon. Everything seems to be good as per what I have read here, except that I didn’t receive an information booklet. Should I be worried? Also the brown retail box is slightly damaged with a tape on it? Should I confront the seller with these 2 things? Thanks in advance for your help.

  7. Hello i purchased a pair of Tom Ford Sunglasses off Groupon. Everything matches as far as the serial number/logo on glasses etc. But the case is white/dust cloth is white?! My other pair has a velvet case. Also no box was included?!

    • Hi Aqaeczihgtu,

Thanks a lot for your post and contributions.
If everything else matches then you probably have nothing to worry about. Older styles don’t have the serial number. However, we recommend that you follow the steps to identify the authenticity of your sunglasses.

As for the white case, the gold embossed logo on both the outside and the inside of the case. Also observe to make sure that this is not a printed logo, it should have texture. If you run your finger over it you should feel the raised letters. Anything that looks cheaply printed should be an automatic red flag.

  8. Hello ,

I have recently discovered this website Stepanistyle. com who claim to sell authentic tom ford eyewear at discounted prices. Are you familiar with their products or can you verify their authenticity claim?

    Thank you

      • I had also purchases a pair off of Stephanistyle and was wondering about the authenticty? My Tom Ford info booklet is not brown but white. Does that mean they’re fake? Everything else seems to match. Any feed back please?

  9. Just purchased a used Tom Ford sunglasses from Online. Style looks like it’s Whitney. However, I cannot find any serial number and style name. Seller said it’s an old style and was purchased when it first came out. Did I buy a fake Tom Ford sunglasses.

    • Hi Rowena,

  10. Hi

I bought my TF Snowdon online back in January, to my surprise, the gold logo by the sides are discoloured, is this a common problem or have I been sold a lemon. If not, what can I do to restore the gold logo.

    • Hi Kwami,
Unfortunately the sale of fake goods is common, so it is important to exercise caution when buying designer items such as Tom Ford, Louis Vuitton, Channel and Paul Smith etc…especially online. Original Tom Ford glasses are of very high so shouldn’t be discoloured. Sometimes the prints on the fakes are made with very low quality dyes. The discolouration of your logo seems to us like a red flag already! Follow the simple steps (Tom Ford Etching, The Retail Box, Retail Box Label, Info Booklet, etc) to verify the authenticity of your purchase.
However, if you would still like to know what can be done to fix your pair of glasses, then try http://www.alphaomega-glasses-repair.co.uk/
It seems they do a pretty good job at repairs!
we do appreciate all your wonderful comments and contributions.

  11. Bought one Tom ford where it say made in made in Italy was beginning surprisingly the Italy has started to run off

  12. Hi there, I believe I have genuine “Jacob” (TF447) from Gaffos.com. The only thing is that the case seems to have longer “hairs” than it used to and leaves fingermarks on it (an effect a suede jacket would have if you rub it in various directions). Also, I noticed that the golden logo on the case wears off with time. Anyone else with this experience? Thanks.

  13. Hi Kevin,
Often new styles of Tom Ford sunglasses feature a serial number on the left arm temple tip.
Be sure to check that it is etched cleanly and clearly.

    • Hi Jesse,
That’s definitely a red flag if you can’t find any serial number Jesse.
If you can see the one or more tell tale signs of a fake product as highlighted, then it probably is.

  14. I recently purchased ” authentic ” tom ford glasses on ebay which un beknownst to me at the time came from hong kong. The box did not have manufacturor info or serial number on it. I also cannot find this specific model anywhere else except on one website in pakistan. They are model number tf0491. They did have box, case, paper work and card but i do know these can all be faked. Items just dont look as nice quality as my other older pair of Tom Ford glasses. I can also easily look up the model number of my other glasses and find them in hundreds of hits on the www as well. Am i dealing with a fake product? Or are these only available in pakistan and hong kong? help?? Thanks in advance!!! 🙂

    • Hi Jesse,

  15. Hi, I purchased a pair of Tom Ford sunglasses for $200.00 online. The style is Prisila, the case s not sturdy and its velvet with Velcro, also item did not come in a box. Everything else on the glasses seems correct. I’m concerned because my glasses did not come with a box. Do all Tom Ford Sunglasses come shipped in Tom Ford boxes? Thanks

    • Hi Sylvia,
Thanks for your reply on this post.
First and foremost I noticed you spell it as Prisila with one “l”. If this is way it is spelt then it could be a fake because the spelling of an original is Prisilla with double “ll”.
If everything else checks out and your only problem is the fact that it didn’t come in a box, then you don’t have to worry.
Sometimes these boxes get thrown away by boutiques and therefore not supplied with the case when they are resold. This happens quite often. So your answer is no, not all come in sturdy cases. Your current pouch however, should feel very nice and thick to the touch. “Tom Ford” should be neatly embossed on it.
Thanks and keep up with your posts Sylvia.

  16. I’ve just ordered two pair from Amazon but I’m very skeptical because they both came with a piece of card the glasses were wrapped around and no care booklet and there is no serial number on either. Help. I’m starting to think they are all fake.

    • Hi Michele,
Are these new pairs? If they are supposed to be new then it definitely suggests that it’s a fake.
New Tom Ford sunglasses are definitely accompanied by an information booklet. These are also accompanied by an authenticity card and envelope.

    • Hi Jim,
Tom Ford eyewear come in Brown velvet or real suede. But more imitations come in the form of the real suede (black) and the finished product actually looks quite tacky.
New Tom Ford sunglasses are accompanied by a case featuring the Tom Ford logo. Check that the logo is consistent with the official Tom Ford logo.
Thanks so much for your comment.
